A Humble Beginning

Abdi’s family lived in a small mud house with a tin roof. His father worked under the hot sun as a farmer, while his mother sold vegetables in the market. They didn’t have much, but they shared love and support.

Even at a young age, Abdi had a deep hunger for knowledge. After school, he would read borrowed books under the mango tree behind his house, using a small kerosene lamp. He learned about space, inventions, and faraway cities. His dream? To become an engineer and build something that would help the world.

When he told others, they laughed.

He used old newspapers, torn book pages, and charcoal to teach himself math and science. At night, he studied using scrap paper and the light of a tiny lamp.

One day in the market, Abdi overheard a conversation about a city school offering scholarships to poor but bright students. His eyes lit up. That night he told his mother, “I want to try.” She nodded, seeing the fire in his eyes.
